HARMONY BETWEEN NATURE AND HISTORY.

Located in the south of Portugal, between the Tagus River and the Algarve. It is a large and mainly rural area. The beauty of its landscape and the quality of its archaeological, monumental and architectural heritage, along with its excellent gastronomy
and its wines, undoubtedly invite us to discover the region.

AN ECO-CHIC AND SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION.

Located in the south of Portugal, between the Tagus river and the Algarve, the Alentejo continues to reaffirm itself as one of the most authentic regions of Portugal. Essentially rural and scarcely populated, it covers almost a third of the Portuguese territory and stands out for the beauty of its landscapes and the quality of its archaeological, monumental, architectural and cultural heritage.

On this occasion, the Alentejo wants to show the unique character of its territory, an eco-chic and sustainable destination that coexists in perfect harmony with nature and offers its visitors all kinds of personalised experiences. With the example of Comporta as a standard, the region shows an eco-friendly tourism, with excellent options for accommodation and firmly believes in the “off-route” ones.

At the Alentejo they prefer to speak of the concept of authenticity instead of luxury. An authenticity that sets them apart and makes them unique. Thus, in this vast country, the visitor can live for a few days in a boat-house, in the heart of the largest artificial lake in Europe; enjoy an unforgettable stay in an old convent; sleep in a wonderful cellar hotel; succumb to the glamour of the famous Comporta, where one runs the delightful risk of coming across Christian Louboutin, Philippe Starck, Jackes Grange, Charlotte Casiraghi or Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni. Are there enough reasons to visit the country of the Alentejo?

THE FIRST “STARLIGHT TOURIST DESTINATION” REGION OF THE WORLD.

In addition to excellent five-star hotels and first-class rural accomodation (in Portugal, the concept of «rural» differs notably from the one we have in Spain, since the Portuguese is of a much higher quality), the Alentejo stands out for offering its visitors all kinds of activities, as well as unforgettable experiences. From a trekking session through the Vicentina route, one of the best rated in Europe, to a balloon ride to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the landscapes of Lake Alqueva and the wonderful Reguengos de Monsaraz, a vinotherapy session, a delicious gastronomic experience or a star-gazing day.

Alentejo has been the first region in the world to receive the designation “Starlight Tourist Destination”, a certification awarded by the Starlight Foundation along with the support of UNESCO, WTO and IAC, which enables the combination of science, tourism and astronomy: a new way of promoting sustainable and intelligent tourism.

With an average of 286 clear days per year and a low impact of light pollution, the Alentejo boasts of having one of the clearest skies in Europe. Among the towns that ensure ideal conditions for an excellent observation of the sky, Reguengos de Monsaraz and Mourão stand out, two enclaves that offer their visitors different binoculars and telescopes, and all kinds of activities to enjoy the sky of the Alentejo: night hiking, horse-riding in the moonlight, astrophotography workshops…
